Farm Fresh Eggs

The More Forest Farm livestock adventure started with chickens whose descendants are still on our farm to this very day. The first item we offered for sale at our farm stand was a dozen farm fresh eggs and we plan to continue this for the foreseeable future.

Chickens

Our flock tends to fluctuate between 30 and 50 chickens depending on the season and egg demand. While we maintain some smaller coops for breeding and raising young chicks, most of the flock reside in a single large coop built shortly after we arrived on the farm.

Our chickens have nearly unfettered access to the entire farm property. They are pasture raised and free to eat whatever they want and forage freely... as long as they stay out of the garden! Remember, chickens are omnivores so their diet consists of both plant matter (grasses, weeds, flowers, fruits, seeds, and grains) and animal matter (beetles, grubs, worms, slugs, grasshoppers, and other bugs). They are at their happiest and healthiest when both sides of this diet are met.

Ducks

Our duck flock is far smaller than our chicken flock. They reside in a smaller enclosure to keep them safe from predators at night but experience the same full-farm freedom as the chickens during the day.

Ducks are even better at foraging than chickens. They produce very large eggs that have a rich texture with higher fat and more protein than that of a chicken. Where these eggs really shine is in baking. Duck eggs are unmatched when it comes to producing the best tasting pastries, baked goods, custards, and sauces. Duck eggs are also available at our farm stand on occasion, but due to lower demand they are not as common.
